A Study of Treatments of Congenital Clubfoot in Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study is a systematic review of the treatment and outcomes of clubfoot in pediatric patients with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of the study was to compare existing treatments and outcome measures for this specific patient population.

The researchers conducted a comprehensive search of various databases to identify relevant articles on clubfoot treatment in pediatric patients with CP. They screened the articles at the title, abstract, and full-text levels and included only those that detailed the treatment of pediatric patients with clubfoot and CP and contained three or more human subjects.

After the screening process, 32 articles with a total of 936 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 8.23 years, and the mean follow-up duration was 51.27 months. The preferred modality of talipes equinovarus correction in CP patients was tibial transfer. Surgical tibial tendon transfer (TT) was documented in 53.13% of the articles, while Botox and casting were referenced in 15.63% of the articles. Other interventions included tendon or muscle lengthening procedures, Botox alone, and osteotomy.

The study found that the average age of patients receiving surgical treatments was higher than those who underwent casting, Botox, or orthotics. Furthermore, there was a lack of standardized outcome measurements reported between studies. The researchers recommend further research to evaluate intervention selection based on desired functional outcome for patients and long-term outcomes.

In conclusion, this systematic review provides insights into the treatment and outcomes of clubfoot in pediatric patients with CP. The study highlights the need for standardized outcome measurements and further research to guide intervention selection.
