Pdf Summary
In this study, researchers investigated the factors associated with high-impact foot and ankle (FA) research, including sub-topics and collaboration trends. They analyzed a total of 7,679 FA-specific articles published in 43 orthopedic journals over the past five years. The researchers utilized the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database for general article information and Web of Science's Journal Citation Report for citation counts.

The results showed that digital publishing and indexing have accelerated collaboration in FA research. Authors now have the opportunity to submit their work to journals that are most appropriate for their research and relevant to the global community. The average citations per year within different sub-topics of FA articles varied significantly. Sports-related FA articles performed better than the average FA article in terms of citation counts, while deformity-related articles performed below the average.

The study also revealed that US authors published the greatest number of first-author FA articles, followed by the UK and China. The country of origin of the primary author varied considerably by journal. American authors were found to be global leaders in FA publications and primarily published in American journals.

Furthermore, the number of authors in an article had a strong positive correlation with article impact. Authors with larger groups had higher citation counts. This finding suggests that collaboration can contribute to the impact of FA research.

The study concludes that various factors, such as article sub-topic and authorship group size, influence both the impact of individual articles and the impact factor of journals. These findings provide opportunities for collaboration, research focus, and journal selection in the field of FA research.
