Clinical Outcomes of Fifth Metatarsal Fractures using Jones Fracture-Specific Screw vs Intramedullary Fixation

This study compares the effectiveness of the Jones Bolt to intramedullary screw fixation and plate fixation for proximal fifth metatarsal fractures (Jones fractures). The Jones Bolt aims to provide more anatomical fixation for this type of injury. The study collected data from athletes and nonathletes who had undergone one of these three treatments between 2010 and 2021. The data analyzed included patient reported outcomes, complication rates, range of motion, pain scores, and radiographs pre- and postoperatively. The study found that there was no significant difference in final postoperative pain scores or outcome scores between the Jones Bolt and the other two fixation methods. Only 2.4% of patients experienced complications, including symptomatic hardware requiring removal. The study concludes that the Jones Bolt is a viable option for proximal fifth metatarsal fractures, with comparable outcomes and complication rates to the traditional fixation methods. However, further research with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up is needed to determine if the Jones Bolt is superior to the other fixation methods.
