Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the coronal orientation of the calcaneus relative to the talus in varus ankle osteoarthritis. The researchers retrospectively reviewed 152 ankles from 100 patients and excluded those with certain conditions such as rheumatic arthritis and valgus ankle deformity. They classified the ankles according to Takakura's classification and divided them into compensated and noncompensated groups based on the apparent moment. Several angles were measured, including the tibial anterior surface angle, talar articular surface angle, posterior subtalar facet angle of the calcaneus, and medial border angle of the calcaneus. The researchers found that apparent subtalar compensation was significantly lower in Takakura stages 3b and 4. They also observed that the calcaneus had various orientations at the subtalar joint in noncompensated varus ankle osteoarthritis. However, in cases where the total talar tilt was not greater than 9.5 degrees, the calcaneus showed an apparently compensatory orientation at the subtalar joint. The study concluded that understanding the subtalar joint's interaction in varus osteoarthritic ankle joints is still incomplete. This study provides insights into the coronal plane calcaneal-talar orientation in varus ankle osteoarthritis, highlighting the association between the orientation of the subtalar joint and varus osteoarthritis of the ankle joint. The researchers disclosed no potential conflicts of interest regarding the research and publication of this article.
