Pdf Summary
This study aimed to test the efficacy of Irrisept® Antimicrobial Wound Lavage in disrupting biofilms on titanium coupons. The study used a CDC biofilm reactor and an adapted ASTM method to grow biofilms of Staphylococcus epidermidis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli on the coupons.

The results showed that the sixty-second dwell treatment group achieved a log reduction of >2 for all four organisms, with the highest reduction of 4.56 observed for S. epidermidis. The antimicrobial effectiveness of Irrisept® was seen against all tested organisms, whether the recommended dwell time was used or not. However, the dwell time was found to improve the efficacy of the treatment.

Overall, Irrisept® Antimicrobial Wound Lavage demonstrated a 99% reduction of biofilm in clinically relevant organisms in an in vitro test. The study used a CDC biofilm reactor and an adapted ASTM method. The device showed efficacy in reducing the tested microorganisms, with greater effectiveness observed when the labeled dwell time was applied.

Additionally, SEM imaging showed the effects of the treatment on biofilms of E. coli, P. aeruginosa, MRSA, and S. epidermidis on the titanium coupons. The growth control images showed a higher density of biofilms compared to the images of the treatment groups.

In conclusion, this study supports the effectiveness of Irrisept® Antimicrobial Wound Lavage in disrupting biofilms on titanium. The device demonstrated efficacy against clinically relevant organisms, with improved effectiveness when the recommended dwell time was applied. These findings are significant for wound care and the prevention of biofilm-associated infections.
