Do COFAS Scores Effect the outcomes of a 4th Generation Total Ankle Prosthesis? A 2-year follow-up
Back to course
Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to examine the impact of COFAS scores on the outcomes of fourth-generation total ankle prostheses. The study involved 148 patients who underwent total ankle arthroplasty with the INFINITY ankle prosthesis. Preoperative and postoperative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were collected, including the Ankle Osteoarthritis Score (AOS), Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Global Physical and Mental Health scores, Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), and satisfaction score.

The study found that all patients experienced significant improvements in PROMs at the two-year follow-up, regardless of their COFAS type. COFAS types include isolated ankle arthritis, ankle arthritis with deformity or instability, ankle arthritis with hindfoot deformity or tibial malunion, and COFAS types with hindfoot arthritis. The type and severity of deformity or hindfoot arthritis did not have a significant impact on PROMs.

The study also analyzed implant revision rates, which were not affected by COFAS type. There were three revisions in the study, two of which were in patients with Type 2 COFAS and one in a patient with Type 4 COFAS.

Based on these findings, the study concluded that COFAS type has little impact on patient outcomes when using fourth-generation total ankle prostheses. However, the researchers note that longer-term follow-up may be needed to confirm these early results.

Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the outcomes of total ankle arthroplasty and highlights the potential benefits of using fourth-generation prostheses.
