Pdf Summary
This study examined the incidence, predictors, and reasons for emergency department (ED) visits within 90 days of total ankle replacement (TAR) surgery. The researchers analyzed data from the 2010-2019 PearlDiver M91Ortho dataset and identified 5,930 TAR patients. Of these, 8.4% (497 patients) had ED visits within 90 days of surgery.

The majority of ED visits occurred within the first two weeks after surgery. The researchers also identified independent predictors of postoperative ED utilization. These predictors included patient age, comorbidity burden, and insurance type.

The most common reason for ED visits following TAR surgery was postoperative pain. Other primary diagnoses among ED visitors included respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, venous thromboembolism, surgical site infection, and other issues related or unrelated to the surgical site.

The study findings highlight the importance of managing postoperative pain in TAR patients and addressing other medical issues to reduce the need for ED visits. Reducing ED visits can not only improve patient satisfaction but also minimize financial burdens associated with healthcare utilization.

In conclusion, this study found that over 8% of TAR patients visited the ED within 90 days of surgery, with most visits occurring in the first two weeks. Patient age, comorbidity burden, and insurance type were identified as predictive factors for postoperative ED utilization. Addressing postoperative pain and providing appropriate medical management can potentially reduce the need for ED visits in TAR patients. Further research and interventions may be warranted to optimize postoperative care and minimize ED utilization following TAR surgery.
