Pdf Summary
The study evaluated the effect of forefoot width variations on clinical and functional outcomes following the Lapidus procedure (LP) for hallux valgus (HV) correction. Forty-three feet in 35 patients were reviewed retrospectively, with measurements taken for bony and soft tissue foot widths (BSFW). Clinical and functional data were assessed using various scales, and radiographic measurements of HV parameters were also taken.

The results showed that the LP led to a significant decrease in forefoot width, both in bony and soft tissue measurements. This narrowing of the forefoot was associated with improvements in clinical and functional outcomes, specifically as measured by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and Physical Component Summary-12 (PCS-12) scales. Changes in the radiographic parameters of HV, particularly the intermetatarsal angle (IMA), were also found to correlate with forefoot width changes.

Overall, the study suggests that forefoot narrowing after the LP procedure leads to better clinical and functional outcomes. However, the authors note that further prospective and comparative studies with larger populations are needed to fully understand the effects of forefoot width changes on these outcomes.

References:
1.
