Five-year Minimum Patient-Reported Outcomes Following Isolated Gastrocnemius Recession for Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendinopathy
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study investigated the long-term patient reported outcomes of gastrocnemius recession as a treatment for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. The researchers collected data from 182 patients who underwent the procedure between 2011 and 2018. They used pre and post-operative pain scores, demographics, and complications as part of their analysis. The patients were then assessed using PROMIS scores and Foot Function Index (FFI) scores.

The results showed that patients experienced a decrease in pain, with Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores decreasing from 5.53 pre-op to 2.11 post-op. The PROMIS scores for physical function (PF) were 46.28, pain interference (PI) was 52.11, and depression score was 42.6. The FFI score averages were 32.95 for pain, 35.91 for disability, and 19.04 for activity limitation.

The study had some limitations, including the lack of preoperative PROMIS scores as a baseline and the fact that the patients who underwent surgery may not be representative of the general population. However, the researchers plan to conduct a more thorough statistical analysis of the results.

Overall, the preliminary results suggest that patients who undergo gastrocnemius recession for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy experience improved patient reported outcomes, as indicated by the PROMIS and FFI scores. The researchers also plan to gather information from patients who are more than five years post-surgery.
