Pdf Summary
This study examines the gender and geographic trends among foot and ankle surgeons. The analysis included 1,088 training fellows, with 15.26% being female and 84.74% being male. The South had the highest total number of surgeons, while the Northeast and West had the least. The West and Northeast had the highest diversity rates.

At the residency and medical school education level, the South had the highest total number of foot and ankle surgeons, while the West had the least. The Northeast and West had the highest diversity rates, while the South had the lowest or second-lowest diversity percentages at all education levels.

Female representation by geographical division showed high variance with no observable trend. Retention rates, defined as those who train in the same geographical location in which they later practice, were highest in the West at the residency level. Medical school retention rates were highest overall in the South.

The study also provides a table showing the ratio of female and male foot and ankle surgeons to the respective populations per region. For example, in the Northeast, there is one female surgeon for every 794,055 females and one male surgeon for every 153,808 males.

Overall, the study highlights the need for improvement in gender and geographic representation among foot and ankle surgeons. It points out disparities in diversity and retention rates across different regions and education levels. The findings suggest that efforts should be made to enhance diversity and encourage more female representation and retention in this field.
