Hallux Valgus Interphalangeus Measurement: Comparison of the 2 Radiographic Methods

This study aimed to compare the reliability of two radiographic methods for assessing hallux valgus interphalangeus (HVI): the established Hallux Interphalangeus Angle (HIA) and the recently published Delta Proximal Phalanx (Delta PP) measurement. The study included 186 feet with hallux valgus, predominantly in females, with an average age of 52.<br /><br />Both observers found significant differences between preoperative and postoperative measurements using both HIA and Delta PP. However, the mean value of Delta PP decreased postoperatively, indicating better quantification of deformity correction compared to HIA.<br /><br />The intraclass correlation coefficients for preoperative and postoperative measurements were calculated for both HIA and Delta PP. Both methods demonstrated good reliability, with Delta PP slightly better than HIA for postoperative measurements.<br /><br />In conclusion, Delta PP is a useful and reproducible aid to preoperative planning for assessing hallux valgus deformity. It provides better quantification of the size of osteotomy required and the correction obtained post-surgery compared to HIA.
