Surgical Options for Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability: How Has the Incidence of the Broström-Gould Procedure Evolved in the Past Decade?
Back to course
Pdf Summary
A recent study from Emory University School of Medicine examined the incidence of the Broström-Gould (B-G) procedure for chronic lateral ankle instability over the past decade. The study used a retrospective national database review to analyze surgical procedure data, with a focus on annual incidence, gender, age, and region.

The results of the study showed significant growth in the incidence of the B-G procedure, with volumes increasing by 89.9% and incidence increasing by 76.6%. Projections also suggest a continued increase in volumes by 61.5%.

The study found that the B-G procedure was most commonly performed on males between the ages of 31 and 70, and females under the age of 70. Regarding region, the South had the highest increase in incidence at 81.7%, followed by the West at 75.4% and the Midwest at 69.2%.

The researchers attributed the growth in the B-G procedure to successful outcomes, technical improvements, and increased interest in the procedure. They also noted that there was a higher utilization of the procedure in the 31-50-year-old age group, with the most significant growth observed in the 51-70-year-old age group. In terms of region, the Midwest and West had higher growth rates compared to the Northeast and South.

In conclusion, the incidence of the Broström-Gould procedure for chronic lateral ankle instability has seen a significant increase over the past decade. The procedure is most commonly performed on males between the ages of 31 and 70 and females under the age of 70. The South, West, and Midwest regions have experienced the highest growth rates. The study suggests that successful outcomes, technical improvements, and increased interest in the B-G procedure have contributed to this trend.
