Pdf Summary
This document summarizes the recent incidence trends of first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) arthrodesis, a surgical procedure to fuse the joint at the base of the big toe. The data was collected from a national database review spanning from 2009 to 2019. The study found that the incidence of 1st MTP fusion has increased by 58.7% during this timeframe, with a significant growth of 70.8% in volumes.

Further analysis of the data revealed that the incidence of 1st MTP fusion has increased more in females (68.2%) compared to males (56.1%). The study also projected a future increase in volumes by 52.7%.

However, there was a decline in volumes of 1st MTP fusion by 11.9%. This decline was more significant in females (16.1%) compared to males (8.3%).

When analyzing age groups, the study found a substantial growth in the incidence of 1st MTP fusion in both males and females aged 51-70 years (86.3% and 61.3%, respectively), 71-84 years (208.0% and 75.8%, respectively), and over 85 years (355.6% and 0%).

In terms of regional trends, the Midwest saw a growth of 30.3%, while the West and South regions experienced significant increases of 89.5% and 90.0% respectively.

This analysis suggests an overall increase in the use of primary fusion for 1st MTP arthrodesis, with a projected increase in future usage. The growth in incidence was higher in older age groups for both males and females. Additionally, there was an increase in regional incidence in the Midwest, West, and South regions.

No financial disclosures relevant to this topic were reported by the authors.
