Characteristics and Early Prognosis of COVID-19 Infection in Fracture Patients
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This scientific study investigated the clinical characteristics and early prognosis of COVID-19 infection in a cohort of fracture patients. The study involved 10 patients with a fracture and COVID-19 who were admitted to different hospitals in Hubei province, China, between January 1, 2020, and February 27, 2020. The main symptoms observed in these patients were fever, cough, and fatigue. Other less common symptoms included sore throat, dyspnea, chest pain, nasal congestion, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Laboratory tests showed that six patients had lymphopenia, nine had high levels of D-dimer, and nine had high levels of C-reactive protein. Three patients underwent surgery, while the others received nonoperative management due to their compromised status. There were four deaths among the patients. The clinical outcomes for the surviving patients were not determined at the time of the study. The study concluded that the clinical characteristics and early prognosis of COVID-19 in fracture patients appeared to be more severe than those reported in adult patients without fractures. The study suggested that surgical treatment should be carried out cautiously or nonoperative care should be chosen for fracture patients in COVID-19-affected areas, especially older individuals with intertrochanteric fractures. Further studies are needed to provide more guidance for the treatment of patients with both fracture and COVID-19.
