Pdf Summary
Haglund deformity, also known as a pump bump, is a bony enlargement at the back of the heel caused by pressure from rigid back shoes. It can be hereditary or triggered by factors such as high heeled shoes and cold weather. Symptoms include aching soreness and a prominence near the Achilles tendon insertion. Diagnostic tests such as X-rays, MRI, and ultrasonography can be used to evaluate the condition. Treatment options include rest, ice, medication, stretching exercises, shoe modifications, physical therapy, and orthotic devices. If non-surgical treatments fail, surgery may be considered to remove the bony protrusion and reduce tension on the Achilles tendon. Healing time for surgical procedures involving the Achilles tendon is about 6 weeks. In severe cases, a calcaneal closing wedge osteotomy may be performed.
