Recorded Webinar: Outreach and Giving Back: How Volunteerism Leads to Happiness and Fufilment
Overview

Moderator: J. Turner Vosseller, MD

Faculty: Pierce E. Scranton, MD; Ruth L. Thomas, MD; Naomi N. Shields, MD; Eric C. Gokcen, MD; Steven F. Conti, MD; Matthew S. Conti, MD

Through the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation Overseas Outreach Projects, AOFAS members have the opportunity to use their surgical expertise to help children and adults in underserved areas. Surgeons volunteer time and pay for their own travel, and the Foundation covers in-country expenses for food, lodging, travel, and logistics support. The Foundation currently sponsors outreach trips to Vietnam and Kenya with plans to expand to new sites in the future.

In part three of the Physician Wellness Series, faculty discuss the powerful impact of this humanitarian work, not just on the patients, but also on the physicians who contribute their time and talents. The panel discusses how their unique experiences in volunteer programs and missions have positively affected their careers and their overall well-being.

At the conclusion of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Describe how volunteering benefits mental and physical health
  • Identify multiple ways that humanitarian work improves career performance
  • Discuss the impact of volunteering abroad on cultural sensitivity and cultural competence
