AOFAS Mission Statement

The mission of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society is to improve lives through exceptional orthopaedic foot and ankle care.

Target Audience

This course is designed for the experienced foot and ankle surgeon, the generalist orthopaedic surgeon interested in expanding their scope of practice into foot and ankle, post-residency fellows and residents who treat acute and chronic problems of the foot and ankle, and allied health professionals who work in foot and ankle care.

Description

This in-depth discussion will examine the challenges associated with treating various types of ankle fractures. Faculty will discuss anatomy, biomechanics, and clinical factors to consider as well as surgical techniques to "get them right" the first time.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this webinar, you will be able to:

• Recognize different types of ankle fractures
• Understand various challenges associated with surgical management of complex ankle fractures
• Understand options available for managing ankle fracture in athletes

A need for this educational activity has been determined based on previous course/meeting evaluations, practice gap analysis, membership surveys, and the AOFAS educational curriculum. The content of this course was based on current issues and topics provided by AOFAS membership and leadership.

Dr. Kwon is currently the associate chief of foot & ankle surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. He attended medical school at New York Medical College. He then performed his surgical internship at Massachusetts General Hospital, then orthopedic residency at Harvard. He performed a foot & ankle fellowship at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore and a thin-wire frame fellowship in Portland, Oregon. He has published numerous papers and book chapters. His main clinical and research interest is foot & ankle trauma.

Dr. Kadakia is a professor of Orthopaedic Surgery within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.  During his career, he has authored more than 100 peer reviewed publications, reviews and book chapters and has lectured both nationally and internationally.   Recently he has co-authored Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery - Management of Complications with Dr. Myerson.    He has been active in the American Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Society (AOFAS) since 2007 and is actively involved with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery in their resident education.

Dr. Max Michalski received his Master's degree in engineering and medical degree from the University of Wisconsin. He spent a year performing research at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, CO. Dr. Michalski completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where he became faculty after his foot and ankle fellowship at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Dr. Joseph S. Park is an Associate Professor with Tenure in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia Health System and serves as the Chief of the Foot and Ankle Division.  He is Chairman of the AOFAS Orthopod-Cast Committee and serves on the AOFAS Foundation Board of Directors.  His research interests include orthopaedic implant and total ankle arthroplasty testing and characterization.  Dr. Park is a Team Physician for UVA Athletics and holds a secondary appointment in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Dr. R. James Toussaint received his medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic residency at Harvard and fellowship at the OrthoCarolina Foot & Ankle Institute. He is currently in private practice in Gainesville, Florida and is an associate professor at UCF College of Medicine. Prior to going into medicine, Dr. Toussaint spent four years as an investment banker focusing on the health care industry.
