This free virtual course will combine current bench and clinical research to define the syndesmotic/high ankle sprain injury. Case studies will be utilized to illustrate treatment options and clinical outcomes.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Examine the anatomy of the syndesmosis and associated ankle structures that may be implicated in external rotational injuries of the ankle

  • Explain the pathomechanics of how a high ankle sprain and syndesmotic ankle injury occur and the resultant variants of injury patterns

  • Understand and appreciate the imaging studies available to recognize the severity of the syndesmotic injury and its potential treatment algorithm

  • Appreciate the treatment options for the high ankle sprain


The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
